Merlin rewatch -- S1E5: Lancelot

Arthur

I never realised just how young and scared Arthur looked at his last attempt to slay the griffin.

His voice was so strained and out of tune. He almost looked like trembling. His eyes were so wide. Even the unfit helmet that I resented made him looked like a child wearing armour.

It struck me that this was his first actual suicide mission. The fight with Valiant and the quest to get the mortaeus flower were dangerous, yes, but not hopeless. But griffin could only be killed by magic according to Gaius, and there was nothing Arthur could do with that.

It almost felt like a childish act that he stormed into Lancelot's cell after the revelation of the griffin's true nature. A petty revenge for his fate of dying. He couldn't escape it, and he couldn't even bring this person who shared so many of his values and his ideals. He kept that authoritative princely voice up through the conversation, but there were still moments when his vulnerability slipped through.

The sad face he hid from the camera when saying " Lancelot you fight like a knight. And I need... Camelot need."

The broken voice with which he told Lancelot " We could not kill it."

Then he had to refuse Lancelot's pleading, despite how much he wanted to have Lancelot around, and chased him out.

Heartbreaking.

I think all of this really nicely led to that fierce outburst in the end. Demanding Uther to give Lancelot a proper title befitting to his honourable deed. Arthur himself was reluctant to fight the griffin, yet Lancelot went despite being locked up then chased out of Camelot.

But of course, Lancelot was too noble for his own good, leaving Arthur devastating...

fam can we talk about this callback. can we talk about the fact that the chances of lancelot remembering that moment yeaaaars ago are 200% actually. and that's why he's chuckling and wiggling his eyebrows at merlin. can we talk about lancelot remembering something from like 4+ years ago. can we talk about how in s01e05 merlin was like "i can't do this damn spell im gonna fail arthur's gonna die" but the moment he learns lancelot is on his way to fight the griffin, merlin is like- wooosh. lancelot im here we're doing this together. guys can we talk about how lancelot makes merlin more daring and brave. can we talk about how merlin's actions inspire lancelot. guys guys can we talk about mercelot---

the bait-and-switch of spending a good part of the episode thinking merlin will spell arthur’s weapon to defeat the griffin only to spell lancelot’s instead, his desperation in repeating the spell as lancelot gets closer and closer to danger & the closeup on lancelot’s face, in wonderment, as he realizes what just happened while merlin cheers in celebration… mercelot never loses, i fear

If I had a nickel for every time that Merlin helped and housed a beautiful man who flirted with Gwen and then got banished from Camelot for breaking the knights code, only to eventually become a knight of the round table, I would have TWO NICKELS.

It might not be a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, etc.

Just some scenes where they were cute together 💕

Absolutely love Arthur’s playful and challenging smile he gave Lancelot. AND Lancelot’s serious and focused gaze. Watching two gorgeous men giving intense looks to each other is an absolute treat.

Two gorgeous men fighting with a single shirt on?? Such a treat. Can Arthur's shirt open even lower!? Seriously why is that shirt like that? 😳 Lancelot's looked relatively normal. (Not less hot ofc)

Arthur pointed the stick at Lancelot’s chest with that provoking smile was �� too much sexual tension omg

“ On your knees" 😳(Bradley's voice was perfect...)

The whole feast scene was so good. Love how close they sat, how they chatted about girls and how they smiled at each other. They looked so happy 🥺

I like that Arthur closed his eyes and bowed his head, didn’t want to watch Lancelot’s sad sad face.

Look how devastating Arthur was to watch Lancelot leave! And twice!

I really like how gentle and genuinely confused Arthur sounded when he told Lancelot he had proved himself. (btw is that music in the background the epic romantic theme that played in every Arwen kissing scene XD My Arlance brain is shrieking)

Merlin, 1x06: Lancelot

This rewatch I'm not getting too much vibes between Arthur and Merlin (except the destiny stuff and two sides of the same coin obv) but what I DO see is both of them crushing so hard on Lancelot. Like, yeah Merlin, he has saved your life, that's true, and you hate living in a monarchy where there isn't any meritocracy, but he never asked you to make him false documents to enter the knights. And when Lancelot asks him about Gwen and Merlin says there's nothing between them EVEN IF THEY KISSED JUST ONE EPISODE AGO?? Like, bro, wtf? Why are you not telling him that? Because it's pretty clear that even if you didn't dislike the kiss, you aren't really into her. So he could just say what happened and tell Lancelot that it didn't mean anything to him.

And Arthur, Arthur, Arthur... Sweet arrogant summer child, maybe you don't know all the aristocratic families' trees, that's fine, but you SHOULD be able to tell if someone had or hadn't been brought up in high society. He even admits it when Lancelot is in jail! I even thought that he knew and closed a blind eye because he thought Lancelot was knight material! And there is no straight reason for him not seeing through Lancelot. The only possible reason is that he was smitten by him. Also I think he doesn't know how to interact with guys he likes so he just gives them chores. (see: Merlin. The character, not the series. But also the series.)

So in this episode every teenager (how old are the characters???) gets a crush on Lancelot (except maybe Morgana), while he saves the day and then rides away into the sunset.
